Covid-safe locations to take your date
In some ways it feels like the world has stopped turning, but for many of us the quest for romance continues. Here are some top Bristol spots perfect for distance dating.
Ashton Court Estate
What better place to walk amongst the autumn leaves hand in hand than the fabulous 850-acre country park? If you’re coming from Clifton then be sure to pick up a flat white courtesy of Clifton Coffee Roasters from the Chapter & Holmes coffee cart first. The pretty woodland and red deer parks in these historic grounds are sure to spark many an interesting conversation.
Watershed arthouse cinema
Maybe not one for a first date, unless the two of you are serious about films. Watershed has just reopened with an exciting new programme of films, as well as one-way systems and plenty of hand-gel dispensers. Choose from I am Greta, Mogul Mowgli, Miss Juneteenth or Capital in the Twenty-First Century to name but a few upcoming titles.
This traditional Thai restaurant on Whiteladies Road is beautifully decorated with hand-carved wooden tables and has a packed menu of starters, set menus, curries and sides, all reasonably priced, as well as a multi-pint ‘beer tower’ – order at your peril… Look out for the deliciously creamy Massaman curry costing just £11.
Best known by some as the set for One Direction’s You & I music video, Clevedon’s pier is an ornate remnant from Victorian seaside culture and offers stunning views across the Severn at sunset. Further along the beach is a tidal pool for year-round swimming – don those wetsuits and pick up a fish and chips to warm up afterwards.
Left Handed Giant
With an ever-expanding list of craft beers from local independent breweries and wood-fired sourdough pizza made fresh to order, LHG at Finzels Reach in town does all the things. The renovated industrial space is appropriately edgy and is a cosy place to spend an evening swapping stories and tasting beer.
