‘Meet George’ follows a day in the life of some of the colourful characters in the bar
After the success of 2018, which saw The Milk Thistle crowned No.6 Best Bar in the UK in the Top 50 Cocktail Bars awards as well as being shortlisted for Bristol’s Best Bar in both the Crumbs and Bristol Life Awards, the team have pooled their collective talents to create a truly groundbreaking new menu, Meet George, which tells the story of the venue’s eccentric taxidermy characters through impressive original artwork and outstanding cocktails.
Regular visitors to The Milk Thistle will recognise the menu’s namesake, George the Elk, the lead character of the menu, from his position above the fireplace in The Parlour. The menu follows George as he encounters other taxidermy characters from around the bar on a day out in Bristol. The artwork was created by Milk Thistle Assistant Manager and trained illustrator Sarah Offa-Jones.
Speaking about the concept behind the artwork Sarah said:
“Having studied narrative illustration at University it was an amazing opportunity to bring my two passions together in this menu. We wanted to create something which was completely different to what our customers are used to, whilst still keeping it fun and unique, and we’re all extremely proud of the result.”
The drinks on the menu were a collaborative approach, with Bar Manager Alex Godfrey encouraging every member of the team to create a drink they felt was a reflection of the personality of the bar.
Speaking about the creative process that went into the drinks on the menu Alex said:
“We wanted to bring to life the characters which are so known and loved in the bar, and make them as much as a part of the team as we are. The inspiration behind ‘Meet George’ was a combination of Fantastic Mr Fox meets Spot Goes to School to create something fun and imaginative that relates the colours in the menu to the flavours of the drinks and challenges people’s perception of what a cocktail menu should be!
Meet George is now available at The Milk Thistle Monday–Saturday, 5pm–late.
