The Caretaker

Harold Pinter's iconic play finds a new lease of life at the Bristol Old Vic this month...

The Caretaker, Harold Pinter’s ever-popular portrait of the human psyche, is brought to life once more at The Bristol Old Vic this month for an extended run. Set against the world’s current precarious political and cultural state, the production becomes all the more invigorating — coupled with a stellar cast and production team, this promises to be an unmissable experience.

Power, honesty, deception, corruption and innocence are just some of the concepts that course through the fibre of the nuanced play — ambiguity and contrasts reign supreme in a work that focuses on just three actors in a confined environment.

Christopher Haydon (Grounded, Twelve Angry Men) directs The Caretaker, a co-production with the theatre and Royal & Derngate. Patrice Naiambana (Barber Shop Chronicles, National Theatre) stars as Davies, with David Judge (Scuttlers, Royal Exchange) as Mick and Jonathan Livingstone (Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s Globe) as Aston.

“For me, Pinter’s not just a great writer, but a prophetic one,” says Naiambana of this new production. “This great tragicomedy reads as if it has been freshly minted for 2017. The combination of vulnerability and aggression in the homeless Davies and the bitter wrangling between the brothers who offer him a kind of asylum rings out of the play with startling clarity. Pinter allows you to discover new meanings and new resonance in his plays, no matter when or where they are performed.”

Pinter’s masterpiece, which premiered almost 60 years ago in April 1960, is celebrated as one of the late playwright’s seminal works — and indeed, one of the most important plays of the 20th century. Over the decades it’s been reworked and staged numerous times across the globe, with fresh audiences finding something different each time; the power of Pinter’s dialogue and the careful use of language allows actors and directors to make The Caretaker feel new with every performance.

There are numerous showings of The Caretaker, with matinees on Thursdays and Saturdays. For full ticket information head to the theatre’s website or call the box office on 0117 987 7877.
