Spring is fast approaching, and as the days finally get longer, hopefully the urge to hibernate is starting to fade away. If January resolutions already seem like a distant memory, and you just can’t face one more sweaty spinning class, step outside and take a deep breath of fresh air …
If you need the motivation to get out and get active, now is the time to set yourself the goal of the Simplyhealth Great Bristol 10k, which takes place on Sunday 7 May.
The popular city centre event is back — bigger and better than ever. Once again it will also include the popular Simplyhealth Great Bristol Family Mile event, designed to get children and parents active together. Open to anyone aged three and over, everyone gets a medal!
The official charity partner of the Family Mile is the Grand Appeal at Bristol Children’s Hospital, and those taking part will be encouraged to fundraise for this popular local cause.
12,500 runners are expected to take on the 10k course, which makes the most of the city’s picturesque backdrop. Starting on Anchor Road near Millennium Square and Bristol Cathedral it runs parallel to the historic Bristol Harbour before continuing along Avon Gorge and taking in the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge.
The return route takes in Spike Island and the Cumberland Basin before passing the soaring gothic St Mary Redcliffe, finishing on Anchor Road close to the start line so that runners can meet up with family and friends and make the most of the bars, restaurants and attractions at the harbourside.
Whether you’re running to fundraise for a cause close to your heart, get fit, make new friends or conquer a personal challenge, do it at the Simplyhealth Great Bristol 10k! There are ten weeks until the event, so plenty of time to sign up and train. If you’re new to running, here are our top tips to get you started:
Don’t try to do too much, too soon. It takes time for your body to adapt to the demands of running, so don’t rush it. Enjoy the journey!
MIX WALKING AND RUNNING
Never view walking as a failure, it’s a great approach for new runners and allows you to be out ‘on the road’ longer than you would be if you were forcing yourself to run the whole time.
WEAR THE RIGHT SHOES
A wardrobe full of brand spanking new Lycra kit isn’t necessary, but a pair of comfortable, supportive running shoes that meet your individual needs is the best investment you can make.
SET A GOAL
There’s nothing like a goal to focus the mind! Make sure it’s a challenging but realistic one that will give you the motivation you need. With that in mind, we’ll see you on the start line of the Simplyhealth Great Bristol 10K on Sunday 7 May!
