Penlea Cottage is a former stable and coach house, but a refurbishment has transformed it into a perfect 21st-century home, says James Higgins
This neatly proportioned cottage was originally the coach house and stables of the Penlea House estate. The estate dates to 1760, but later became part of St Bernard’s school, whereupon this building was converted into Penlea Cottage for the incoming caretakers. Today, it is a home of impeccable quality with modern fittings throughout.
The ground floor of the property comprises a parallel kitchen/diner and a living room, with an entrance hallway providing access to a utility room, and integral garage. The kitchen/diner and living room both measure 20m² and are connected by double doors which, once open, create a flexible and extra-spacious living area.
The kitchen is striking and timeless. Dark wood flooring contrasts with the light-coloured worktops, walls and fitted units. A handy island unit provides a breakfast bar and has an integrated oven and hob with an extractor over. The rest of kitchen has been completed with lots of noteworthy features – from the fitted wooden units, the vintage-style handles and knobs, the mirrored splashbacks and the integrated appliances which include a dishwasher and fridge/freezer. It is nothing short of perfection!
The lounge has ample space for all the family and has been decorated in an understated style – a perfect blank canvas, or a great backdrop for the brightly coloured touches the current owners have incorporated.
Moving upstairs, the old stable has been partitioned well which has created four good-sized bedrooms. There is a rather splendid master bedroom with en suite shower room, and three further double-bedrooms of varying sizes. The family bathroom has a particularly pleasing design. Patterned floor tiles and a roll-topped free-standing bath tub with clawed feet really imbue the room with a timeless sophistication, while the two-tone blue and white colour scheme and dark wood give it a sleek, contemporary style. There is a walk-in shower and his-and-her basins in a small cabinet next to the bath.
There is a sizable enclosed garden to the rear and private parking provided at the front of the house which is accessed via a private lane shared with some neighbouring apartments.
