Get bang on trend with an al fresco living style

A buoyant housing market has prompted Britons to create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection by opting for an al fresco living style. A survey of homeowners has found that they are prepared to spend an average of £6,175 for this open-air home improvement.

Patio doors are at the top of their lists as they install an average of 2.67 per home to reduce lighting and heating bills and enhance the quality of their space. PVC still leads the choice in materials, closely followed by aluminium and then timber. However, bi-fold and sliding doors are becoming more popular in aluminium.

The survey also shows that the majority of homeowners prefer to make the purchase decision themselves rather than leaving it up to their architect or builder. They also prefer to buy from suppliers rather than merchants.

The survey was carried out by Homebuilding & Renovating, with its next show taking place in London in September.

According to Jason Orme, spokesperson for The London Homebuilding & Renovating, creating an al fresco living style with the help of patio doors shows a love for bright, open spaces, which allow homeowners to drench their properties in natural light, increasing their wellbeing and potentially decreasing their household bills. With almost 16,500 planning permissions being granted in 2016 for new single dwellings, an increase of 24 per cent YOY, outdoor living forms a large proportion of homeowners’ desires.

The main source of data that this report is based on is an entirely new comprehensive consumer survey of 500 self-builders who had either recently completed or are about to complete their project. This research was conducted via an online survey in 2017. The overall analysis was compiled based on statistics from HMRC, DCLG and more.
