Operatic adventure

Three iconic productions from the Welsh National Opera head to Bristol this month...

The Welsh National Opera is headed to Bristol’s Hippodrome this month for a trilogy of mesmerising productions — Shakespeare’s Macbeth and The Merchant Of Venice, and Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate.

The WNO production of The Merchant Of Venice stops in Bristol on 11 October. It’s one of The Bard’s best-known plays, but André Tchaikowsky’s operatic edition has languished in obscurity for decades — this performance is part of the first-ever UK run. A deeply complex and serious opera, it’s definitely going to hit hard, with Tchaikowsky’s take ostensibly inspired by his experiences in the Warsaw ghetto as a child. It’s described as a “potent attack on prejudice”, and it’s a must see. Lester Lynch plays Shylock in the Bristol production. Tickets from £12.90; 7pm start.

The production arrives in the UK thanks to the performances commissioned at the Bregenz Festival in Austria by David Pountney. It’s a co-production with the festival and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute as part of the Polska Music programme & Teatr Wielki, Warsaw.

Macbeth will be performed on 12 October, with Luis Cansino as the title character and Mary Elizabeth Williams as the scheming Lady Macbeth. The iconic tragedy has been adapted to be a “thrillingly intense” opera full of passion, emotion and supercharged suspense. Tickets from £12.90; 7.15pm start.

Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate will have a trio of performances across three nights. Set in 1940s Baltimore, the show centres around the opening night of a musical version of Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew, where actors and gangsters get caught up in a storm of laughs, dance and, of course, classic showtunes. Tickets from £12.90; 7.30pm starts.

These three productions are excellent showcases of talent from the Welsh National Opera and their partners, displaying depth and a mighty variety of styles. With tickets starting at less than £13, this means you can enjoy all three sensational shows for under £45! Bargain.
