Minimise Your Space

Fight the winter blues with these top tips for a happy and healthy home

It’s getting darker by the day and the winter cold seems to have crept in overnight. It can be a difficult time of year for a lot of people, what with the weather playing a huge part in terms of how we feel on a day-to-day basis. It’s more important than ever, then, to ensure the house you come home to is a serene and stress-free space. Follow these tips to de-clutter and create a home you can always be happy in, regardless of the weather.

What Do You Really Need?

Ask yourself this question. Sometimes we inhabit spaces for several years and forget about all the things we have accumulated over time. You buy something with the intention of using it, but instead it takes residence in a cupboard or a shelf and eventually it just becomes part of the furniture. Look around your home and ask yourself what it is you really use. Be honest. It may be hard to decide at first, but once you’ve got into the routine of re-evaluating what you use, you’ll have a different perspective on what you need.

Throw Out The Excess!

Once you’ve organised your belongings into a true reflection of usage, start disposing of the excess. This doesn’t mean you must fill bin bags full of stuff and drag them down to your local tip. What you deem unnecessary for your home might be vital for another household. Ask around your neighbours, social groups or post on social media your unwanted items. If there’s no luck there, take them to a charity shop. As the saying goes, “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure”.

Rearrange What’s Left

Have a play around with what you have left until you’re happy with the space you’ve created. It should be light and airy, but cosy enough so you can snuggle up after a long day at work. You should feel relieved when you finally take a seat in a home that feels ordered but still has that touch of character that makes it unique to you. Find in your space a respite from the chilly winter wind and an escape from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. You’d be amazed at how linked your mind and your home are. By stripping back to the bare necessities of living, you can find in your heart the true values that make for happiness.
