Meet the people behind the properties

Buying/renting a new house or business premises is a big decision, so why not get to know the people who will be helping you out a little better…

Goodman & Lilley

Name: John Wootton

Company: Goodman & Lilley

Job title: Head of Land and Operations

Years in Bristol: 35

What does your job entail, day to day?

Every day is different, one day I will be travelling to a land site to meet with developers, the next I could be planning a marketing campaign or catching up with the letting team. A lot of my day though would be taken up with communicating and administration, you can’t get away from that.

What’s your favourite thing about working in the property industry?

I have always had a passion for property, starting out as a quantity surveyor many years ago. Throughout my career I have been involved with development design and acquisition. I get a real buzz discussing ideas for land and new homes and connecting with the people that make these ideas a reality.

Tell us the best part of your job?

I’m a real people person, I believe talent and hard work should be rewarded, fortunately my role at Goodman & Lilley enables me to get involved with the team and progress those who show a passion for the industry.

Favourite place in Bristol?

It has to be the Docks, so much history and a shining example of what is now a modern social centre for the city, bustling bars and restaurants, independent businesses, street markets and entertainment all nestled alongside the floating harbour! My first boss took me to the Brunel Buttery in the late eighties and I fell in love with the area. I have lived on the docks, and its been fascinating to watch this area develop and evolve over the past 35 years.

What, in your opinion, makes Bristol such a great place to live?

Where do I start? Obviously, the architecture is impressive, Bristol Cathedral, Wills Memorial for example, and the city has such diversity. As cities go, it still feel small enough to call home and a lot of that is down to the people here. We’re surrounded by countryside and water, so you never have to far to go if you want to get away from the hustle.
