Masa + Mezcal to open this Thursday

The highly anticipated Mexican restaurant will open for a soft launch period later this week

Opening on Thursday 14 March, Masa + Mezcal will offer fresh, innovative and artisanal Mexican food and drink, in the site previously occupied by Corner 77 in Stokes Croft.

The bar and restaurant is the fifth venue for Bristol based husband and wife team Kieran and Imogen, founders of Season + Taste which includes Bravas, Bakers and Co, Cargo Cantina and Gambas, and will be led by former Bravas head chef and Mexican native chef Carlos Rivas.

The menu has been a collaborative effort between Rivas and Season + Taste executive chef Mark Chapman and Alec Morton, head chef at Cargo Cantina, and will draw inspiration from the team’s research trips to Mexico and passion for Mexican food and drink. With a selection of smaller dishes, perfect for casual grazing, or larger Mexican-style family dinners, the menu will be completely gluten free as well as offering a wide range of vegetarian, vegan and plant-based options. In line with Season + Taste’s ethos of being as sustainable as possible, all ingredients will also be free range, organic and ethically sourced. Food will be served until late, with the kitchen closing at 23:30 during the opening period, making it an ideal spot for late night eating and drinking.

The launch menu will feature several different sections including:

  • Botanas – small snacks designed to be enjoyed with a drink.
  • Masa – dishes based around maize dough which will all be made in house from scratch, such as tacos, tostadas, thayudas and quesadillas.
  • Crudo – raw dishes inspired by the bright, fresh flavor or traditional Mexican aguachilli.
  • Asado – larger dishes grilled on the charcoal grill or roasted in the oven.
  • Traditional sides including rice, beans, avocado and wild greens.

Drinks served at Masa + Mezcal will center around the restaurant’s namesake, Mezcal, a Mexican spirit made from roasting, fermenting and distilling the many varieties of Agave plant. Mezcal will be available straight up, in tasting flights or mixed into cocktails. Alongside the cocktail menu diners will be able to enjoy carefully sourced wines and a special craft beer, Masa, made in collaboration with Bristol-based Good Chemistry Brewing who also used maize in the brewing process.

Masa + Mezcal will open for an initial soft launch period on Thursday 14 March until Saturday 30th March. Opening hours for the soft launch period will be Tuesday to Saturday, 16:30–midnight, with food being served until late when the kitchen closes at 23:30. After the soft launch period from Tuesday 16 April, Masa + Mezcal will be open Tuesday to Thursday 16:30–midnight, Friday and Saturday 10am–midnight and then Sundays from 10am–5pm.
