From Cornwall to the heart of Whiteladies Road, Hubbox becomes the latest contender to join the Bristol burger scene
On what they’ve described as an “edible crusade that started in St Ives at the skinny end of Cornwall”, the Hubbox ethos of good food, good beer and good times has steadily worked its way up the West Country.
With eateries already in Truro, Pentewan Sands, Exeter and Plymouth, Hubbox has now taken up residence at 113 Whiteladies Road, opposite Clifton Down Shopping Centre, and where Las Iguanas used to be.
Hubbox opened in late July, so there was still a buzz about the newbie eatery when we arrived on a busy Wednesday night.
Retro light fittings, exposed brickwork and some eye-catching signage, including the adverts for ‘Big Dick’s tasty and delicious big dogs’, is in-keeping with this expanding brand – cosy, comforting, and a bit of fun.
The shipping container at the back houses the kitchen, acting as a canteen-style serving hatch, which made me feel like I was down at Wapping Wharf, not in the middle of Whiteladies Road. Our helpful waitress later told me that the original Truro Hubbox started in a shipping container.
The menu kicks off with a range of beef, chicken, veggie and fish burgers, followed by the hot dogs and BBQ style dishes. The tongue-in-cheek theme seen on the restaurant walls continues on the menu, with dishes like ‘Make Me Dirty’ and ‘Mother Clucker’.
It was refreshing to see a good range of vegetarian options, including the Bella – grilled goat’s cheese with portobello mushroom, roasted red pepper, red onion marmalade, mayo and wild rocket – and the Nacho Libre – nacho-fried bean patty, guacamole, chilli coriander salsa and shredded lettuce in a Baker Tom ciabatta roll, both £7.95.
After perusing the menu and struggling to choose between a burger or a hot dog (it’s a tough life) I went for the Chilli Cheese burger (£9.50) – a 6 oz. beef patty, beef chilli, American burger cheese, chipotle mayo, shredded lettuce, diced onion and jalapeños. My dining partner opted for the Pit Burger (£9.50) – slow-smoked beef brisket, BBQ sauce, American burger cheese and slaw.
The portions are generous but not gluttonous, and it’s obvious these meals are made with quality ingredients rather than a quantity of stodge on a plate – a difficult balance to strike with such a carb-heavy meal. The menu proudly states that the hot dogs are made of free-range pork, and that all the beef comes from a family-run Cornwall-based butchers.
We teamed our beef buns with the standard hand-cut fries (£2.75) and, my top pick, a Mug of Mac (£2.95) a hearty mug full of piping hot macaroni and cheese – West Country Cheddar, decadently topped with a Parmesan crumb.
The sides are a real highlight of this menu. Ranging from £2.50–£6.75, diners can try a variety of fries; including sweet potato, cheesy, and pulled pork, as well as crispy chicken strips, BBQ burnt end beans, fennel slaw, and many more.
There’s also an enticing stock of craft beers. We opted for a crisp Bibble to wet our whistles, but a selection of cocktails, shakes, soft drinks and Origin Coffee is also available.
Bristol has seen a whole host of burger places open in recent years, from the popular Burger Joint branches in Clifton, Fishponds and Bedminster to the trendy Three Brothers Burgers on Welsh Back. With so much burgerlicious choice in the city already, you have to wonder whether Hubbox can really make a go of it here. But by choosing to concentrate on quality ingredients and clever menu choices cooked well and served with a smile, this expanding brand could become a strong addition to Bristol’s burger scene.
