Success for the Downs School Junior Equestrian team
The Downs School Junior Equestrian team brought home the silverware from the Stonar Interschools One Day Event amid competition from schools as far away as Taunton and Hampshire.
Competing in the 8-10 year olds section, the Downs School riders, Pepper (riding Fred), Evie (Bingo) and Sophie (Sonny) won at this prestigious and highly competitive event. Proving that they are more than one trick ponies, the girls took part in a three-phase competition (dressage, show jumping and cross country) incurring as few penalties as possible in each phase. After lying in third place after the dressage phase, the girls (and their trusty steeds) were chomping at the bit to get on with the two jumping phases. After carefully negotiating the brightly coloured obstacles in the showjumping phase, they flew round the challenging cross country course with huge smiles on their faces. When all the scores were finally in, the Downs School were clear winners. The team manager commented: “Riding has really taken off at the Downs School over the last few years and for a relatively small school to put a team together at this level and in this age group just shows how it has taken off – we are exceptionally lucky to have the support of the school as well as access to the school’s estate to train in.” The school was also placed in two other classes at the event.
