Funny girl

Sheridan Smith's turn as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl has won her countless plaudits from critics and fans alike

Smash hit Funny Girl is now touring the country following a record-breaking, critically acclaimed run on London’s West End — it heads to Bristol later this month for almost a week of performances, so there are plenty of chances to catch it live!

Olivier Award-winning actress and singer Sheridan Smith (Cilla, Mrs. Biggs) takes the lead role as Fanny Brice in the semi-biographical production, which follows the life of the comedian, actress and singer as she ascends from Brooklyn music halls to the dizzying heights of Broadway. Smith’s performance has been described by The Times as “hilarious, glorious, touching” and sees her at the peak of her abilities. Natasha J Barnes also portrays Brice on select nights, with Chris Peluso and Darius Campbell starring as leading man Nick Arnstein.

As well as iconic songs and dances to marvel at, there are plenty of laughs and a huge helping of heart — Funny Girl is the complete package that will have you thrilled from start to finish, with a superb cast and phenomenal sense of period glamour throughout.

The original production ran for three years in the mid-’60s, and made a star out of Barbra Streisand, who got her break playing the lead role of Brice on Broadway. The film adaptation (1968) reached a new audience, with Streisand reprising her role opposite Omar Sharif — as well as being a huge success, the film scored Streisand an Oscar for Best Actress.

Funny Girl’s book is written by Isobel Lennart (revised by Harvey Fierstein), with music by Jule Styne and lyrics from Bob Merrill. This run is directed by Michael Mayer and choreographed by Lynne Page.

Evening performances take place daily between 21—25 March, with matinee showings on Thursday and Sunday. Tickets are available from £18 — make sure you book quickly!
