Looking for somewhere to get away for a weekend in the UK? Snaptrip have confirmed the five most popular places to go for a weekend break in the country.

1 – Matlock

Matlock is a very well located holiday destination for holidaymakers from much of the UK, and offers a fantastic range of activities in a very traditional British setting. On top of great walks and convenient proximity to bakewell (the home of the delicious cake) there are great family activities such as the Heights of Abraham and Gulliver’s Kingdom.

 2 – Grange-over-sands

A coastal town in southern Cumbria, Grange-over-sands is a great base for coastal and hilly inland walking breaks. The location makes it accessible for much of the Midlands, so it’s a convenient way to retreat to a quaint, quiet scenic part of the country. Another big draw is Cartmel racecoure which hosts fixtures and events in their historic grounds.

 3 – Whitby

With a wonderful wide sandy beach, famous scenic abbey and a great accessible location, we were surprised Whitby wasn’t higher up. You can fill quite a few weekends with activity here, there is plenty to do – Whitby Museum, Captain Cook Memorial Museum, Dracula Experience and more.

 4 – York

York is a great city break destination and that’s what makes it a fantastic weekend destination all year around. The historic town is gorgeous and hosts Christmas markets in winter and lots of shopping and great food and drink all year around. There is also the fascinating Viking museum, a great one for the family.

5 – Bideford

As well as coming in 5th for weekend breaks, Bideford ranked number 1 on Snaptrip for long breaks and it’s not hard to see why. Being nice and close to Westward Ho! and the start of the Tarka Trail, there’s plenty to do nearby. Even on rainy weekends when the kids are pulling at your ankles, head to The Big Sheep where there are plenty of rainy day friendly activities for the little ones. If your kids are a bit older you might want to visit The Burton Art Gallery and Museum or the North Devon Maritime Museum.

So blow off those January blues and book somewhere fun to go!
