Pizzarova's serving up the freshest pizzas on the block, writes Sammy Milton

If you’re a pizza fan, then there’s no better place than Bristol to find the Italian doughy delight. The last couple of years has seen the city become positively rife with the eateries, in the forms of pizza cafes, takeaways and sit-down restaurants. It’s become something of a way of life.

If you’ve been hanging around the trendy new Cargo development at Whapping Wharf, then you’re sure to have laid eyes on the ‘Crate’ by pizza experts Pizzarova.
A 20ft ‘pizzabox’, people have been flocking to this gourmet food van (whatever the weather) to grab a hot, tasty slice of the action, and it hasn’t stopped there. As well as the roaming pizza van, Pizzarova have acquired a prime site just up Gloucester Road, creating the perfect place for the people of Bristol to come in (or take away) piping hot pizzas.

Arriving on a sunshine-and-showers Wednesday evening, the restaurant was a delight to look at. It’s got a good-sized space out front for those wishing to dine al fresco, complete with covering for when the weather inevitably turns. Inside is very pleasing indeed — long wooden tables adorn the room, with an open kitchen towards the back allowing you to watch your creations come to life.

And what creations! What choice!

The menu is extremely exciting, and not to mention, brilliant value. There are three ways to order — ‘The Lady’, a classic margarita with tomato, mozzarella and oregano, ‘Ours’, the monthly seasonal pizza of their choosing or ‘Yours’ a margarita topped with your own personal choice of as many toppings as you’d like. Simple, uncomplicated and fun.

We went with the ‘Yours’ option. Not only the best way I’ve ever seen to order a pizza, it also only costs £10.00. For as many toppings as you’d like. What a great idea.

Delighted with this, we settled in the window seat to do the obligatory people-watching and had a browse of the toppings on offer. I won’t list them here as there are many, but there was an excellent choice and it’s nice to see that vegetarians are very well catered for. Not being vegetarian, however, I immediately went for chorizo, red chilli, spinach and mushrooms. My dining partner opted for anchovies, red chilli and ham, and we both went for fresh rocket.

They arrived quickly, piping hot with those wonderful, carbon-blistered crusts that are the mark of an excellent pizza. You can tell from the outset that these guys really care about their food — the toppings were plentiful and perfectly cooked, the pizza maintained an excellent shape and structure and the dough was of an incredibly high quality. My chorizo was rich and had an excellent depth, the chilli had the appropriate amount of kick and the spinach and mushrooms were delicate, welcome additions. My partner’s pizza was just as good, and we both commented on the full flavour of the tomato sauce base and the creamy mozzarella.

We were treated like royalty throughout this review, and that’s something that really stood out. All of the staff were approachable, fun and game for a chat and a laugh. They even gave us a piece of rich, decadent biscuit cake to finish off with.

Pizzarova is your friendly neighbourhood pizza restaurant. If that sounds clichéd, I can’t help it, that’s exactly what it is. And it’s great.
