At Clifton High, The Adventure Continues

By instilling a love for the natural world, encouraging children to push their boundaries and learn new skills, pupils at Clifton High thrive inside and outside the classroom

Following the successful launch of the Adventure Programme earlier this year, pupils at Clifton enjoy the benefits of their bespoke outdoor education programme, which is intertwined with their weekly timetable.

The School has teamed up with Mendip Outdoor Pursuits, Belmont Estate, Oxfordshire Outdoors and Farm Link to facilitate the programme. Beginning in the Summer Term 2021, the programme commenced with weekly lessons and short courses for the Infant and Junior School and day visits for all Senior years.

The aim of the Adventure Programme is to enable skill development, rather than one-off introductory sessions – Clifton High’s aim was to make up for the time children spent indoors over lockdown and to grow in them an appreciation for the living world.

Visits to the Mendip Centre will include off-site forest school, climbing, kayaking, archery, target sports, rock skills, hiking, tobogganing and skiing. Clifton High teaching staff also lead outdoor curriculum enrichment such as nature studies, art and creative writing.

Farm education at Belmont Estate is provided for children in Reception-Year 4 to learn about nature, sustainability, non-aggressive farming, conservation, rewilding, foraging and the environment.

The Infant School also enjoys Beach Education, where they incorporate the surroundings of the West coastline into their curriculum subjects such as Art, Design, Construction, Science and Drama.

The Senior School provision includes weekly extra-curricular clubs; curricular field trips including English Creative Writing lessons in the Mendip Hills and Biology lessons on the Southwest coastline; end of year bonding trips; and opportunities for coaching on individual pursuit sports.
