Exploration caving and abseiling will soon be coming to Somerset tourist attraction Wookey Hole Caves
Opening soon, the Wild Wookey cave challenge will be available to adventurous visitors who dare to go further into the realms of darkness.
Coinciding with the Somerset tourist attraction’s 90th Anniversary, the Wild Wookey caving course will be one of the best in Europe and means you can now venture further into Wookey Hole Caves than ever before, journeying into the unknown and tackling previously off-limits parts of the labyrinth of caves and tunnels.
Suitable for adventurers aged 14+, the exciting course begins with daredevils entering the caves through a cliff-face hole before winding their way through a maze of natural wild cave passages and taking on a roped descent to the water’s edge of the River Axe.
Traversing raised walkways and a perilous bridge over deep waters, climbing a series of bold rock faces, abseiling down to the riverbank of the River Axe and crawling through historic passageways are just some of the highlights of this new challenge in the heart of the Mendips.
Qualified and experienced instructors will equip adventurers with all the gear including suits, helmets, harnesses, lights and gloves.
Daniel Medley, Wookey Hole Caves managing director, said: “Wild Wookey will give people the chance to venture into the dark recesses of one of the world’s most famous caves, facing phobias, going deeper and journeying into the unknown. Crawls, climbs, abseil, darkness, enclosed spaces and more await!
“Painstaking works, with conservation in the forefront of planning, have been underway to create an exciting course which takes on some of the more challenging sections near to the main showcave route.
“Until now only professional cavers have been able to explore these caves but we have worked hard to ensure this course is suitable for fit and healthy beginners. It’s not for the faint-hearted though, it’s a thrilling journey and adds yet another dimension to our offering here.
“This year we are celebrating the 90th anniversary of opening as a showcave and Wild Wookey is a fantastic way to mark the occasion and demonstrate how much we have developed and expanded as a tourist attraction. We hope this new attraction will further boost Somerset tourism in 2017.”
