Andrew Griffin plans June launch for Bomboloni

The new Italian inspired restaurant will be located on Gloucester Road for family and friends to enjoy all day

Andrew Griffin, the veteran Bristol Chef with a pedigree that includes Markwicks, Tart Café & Foodstore and Prego, is due to open ‘Bomboloni’ on Bristol’s Gloucester Road in March. Bomboloni will be an Italian inspired restaurant for family and friends to gather all day.  It is named after the Italian doughnuts, filled with cream, salted caramel or chocolate ganache that are popular in Italian cafes.  Happily, these will made daily in the new restaurant.

Griffin is installing a charcoal grill and pizza oven in the restaurant at the bottom of Pigsty Hill, Gloucester Road.  His team of chefs will include his wife Sara and his daughter Molly, who was his apprentice at the extremely successful Tart Café & Foodstore on the Gloucester Road while training at Bristol College.  Molly subsequently worked as a chef at The Stock Exchange Bakery before joining her father in the family venture.

Alongside filled Italian Bomboloni, other cakes and pastries will be handmade daily.  The team will be baking sourdough, seeded granary and fruit bread in the pizza oven too.

At lunchtime, a selection of seasonal salads will be available, with pizzetta and a bake of the day, for example cannelloni or aubergine parmigiana.  There will be one pasta dish and one risotto each day, changing with produce in season.

From 5pm Bomboloni’s family service will swing into action with meatballs & pasta, arancini, pizzas and more bomboloni, of course.  Then from 7pm, the chargrill will be on for whole grilled fish, marinated chicken, rib eye steaks and grilled vegetables.  As well as pasta and risotto, there will be antipasti, garlic bread, polenta chips and plenty of salads to choose from.  Something for everyone!

A short, reasonably priced wine list will be complemented by Italian bottled beers, a few local guest ales and a selection of soft drinks.

Andrew Griffin says, “Our aim for Bomboloni is to achieve the atmosphere of a relaxed, Italian family kitchen.  We aim to provide excellent value for money and great quality, to make Bomboloni accessible to everyone. With this in mind, there will be a family deal between 5pm and 7pm.”

Sara continues, “After 7pm, things will become a little more grown up, but we’ll still be informal and easy going.  We’re there for the nights there is nothing in the fridge or you can’t be bothered to cook but you fancy fresh and tasty food.  Equally we’ll have the Pignoletto chilled at all times in anticipation of a celebration or special evening!  We can’t wait to get the door open and welcome everyone in!”
