165 Annual Open Exhibition

Bristol's first gallery receives record number of artist entries to its Annual Open Exhibition

The renowned RWA Annual Open Exhibition has returned for its 165th year with over 600 works on display by emerging and established artists.

This year’s exhibition received a record 2,750 artworks by artists all over the globe. The RWA’s Annual Open is the biggest open exhibition in the region.

Entries include painting, drawing, film, photography, sculpture and mixed-media works by artists of all ages, backgrounds and styles. Last year, this vibrant exhibition attracted over 12,000 visitors to Bristol’s oldest gallery.

The 165 Annual Open includes works by two prestigious invited artists – renowned painter and President of the Royal Academy, Christopher Le Brun, and photographic artist Tom Hunter RA. The diverse exhibition also features works by the RWA’s own Academicians and other leading international artists.

Artworks are chosen by a selection panel, which this year included acclaimed curator Marie- Anne McQuay, Head of Programme at Bluecoat, Liverpool, and writer, curator and lecturer James Russell.

The Annual Open reflects the RWA’s ongoing commitment to championing world-class art in the region and creating opportunities for new and emerging talent. The exhibition provides an opportunity for artists at any stage of their career to exhibit in a major exhibition alongside big names from the art world, and to present their work to the many keen art buyers who flock to see the show each year.

There are also a range of prizes to be won. This year, those prizes included a solo exhibition at David Simon Contemporary gallery in Bath, sponsored by David Simon Contemporary; two memberships of arTag, a new electronic tagging portfolio management platform for artists, collectors and archivists; and £500 worth of framing or printing and a £250 cash prize from Niche Frames.

Open until 3 December 2017, RWA, Queens Road, Bristol, BS8 1PX
