Best for: Traditional dishes perfectly done
Traditional British roasts served up in a warm, family friendly atmosphere. The location is cracking and above all the prices are reasonable. There are delicious puddings, local beers and great wines. With over 10 years of experience you’re bound to be impressed. Prices start from £13 for two courses. Starters include fried garlic and chili king prawns, pork, chorizo and Godminster cheddar potato cake or roasted parsnip and sage soup and creamy leek wild mushrooms on toast.
Example menu: Slow roast belly of Old Spot pork, roast sirloin of Wiltshire beef or a lentil, wild mushroom and cashew nut roast. This is a great roast in possibly the nicest location, and that makes it our pick of the bunch!

The Hen and Chicken
Best for: Variety
The Hen and Chicken had a refurb a little while ago and has quickly become one of the nicest places to get a lovely Sunday lunch in South Bristol. Tucked away on the up-and-coming North Street, it’s in an ideal location to wander around the independent shops afterwards, or look at all the stunning street art.
Example menu: Rare roast sirloin of beef, shoulder of lamb, cider pork with crackling and lentil and mixed nut loaf with vegetarian gravy. Keep an eye out for their specials too! Roasts start from £10.50.

The Pony and Trap
Best for: A high-end roast with imagination
The Pony and Trap specialise in fantastic food with creative concepts, and their roasts are no different. Located in the pretty area of Chew Magna, each week’s menu features in-season vegetables from the community farm. The owner, Josh Eggleton, has made quite a name for himself in Bristol, so this is a roast not to be missed! Starters include pressed pork and apple terrine, poached salmon with seaweed, cucumber and dashi, and venison faggots with swede, sprout tops and granola.
Example menu: Roast sirloin, pork belly, cod, sole and squash, all accompanied by lovely seasonal vegetables and steamed greens. Desserts are sensational too! Starts at two courses for £26.

The Bank Tavern
Best for: A warm, traditional pub atmosphere with reasonably priced roasts
The Bank Tavern is in an enviable position right in the heart of Bristol. A wonderfully relaxed pub, their ethos is centred around never paying for something they could do better themselves. Featuring an all-homemade menu of seasonal meat and vegetables, everything is an excellent price and of the highest standard. Starters include leek, parmesan broth and pickled walnut, venison tartare with charcoal emulsion and raw mushroom, and pig-skin noodles in a mackerel bone broth with sesame.
Example menu: Rare beef, rolled pig belly and roast celeriac, all served with the traditional accompaniments. Starts at two courses for a reasonable £12.

The Lazy dog
Best for: A great family roast
The Lazy Dog is situated just along Ashley Down Road in a wonderful residential location. A lovely space with an enviable back garden, it serves up excellent Sunday roasts in a welcoming atmosphere.
Example menu: Dry aged rib of beef, Wiltshire pig loin, Welsh Borders lamb shoulder and the highly recommended butternut, spinach and mushroom Wellington for vegetarians. Their triple-cooked chips are something else, too. Roasts start from £10.95.

Best for: Generous portions and great viewings
Nestled in the heart of Clifton, The Lansdown does roasts properly. Known for being a reliable place to watch the rugby, they serve wonderful traditional Sunday Roasts with all the trimmings. They often screen films in their covered back garden too, ideal for lazy summer evenings! It is an optimum location close to the Clifton Downs, perfect for a stroll after a big lunch.
Example menu: Lamb shank, roast beef, chicken, porchetta and a cashew and walnut roast with all the trimmings and an excellent mash. Roasts start from £9.50.
