Nick Short: "I will continue to drive the academy forward from strength to strength"
Nick Short joined Bristol academy on 1 June with vision to raise aspirations for younger students
Nick Short has been appointed Principal of Merchants’ Academy in south Bristol, taking up his new post on 1 June. Previously he held the position of Head of Secondary for the academy and has been a member of its leadership team since it opened in 2008. Having grown up in the South West, Nick returned to Bristol after five years teaching at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knight’s Academy in London.
Merchants’ Academy, for students from age four to 18, is part of the Merchants’ Academy Multi Academy Trust that from September 2016 will comprise Merchants’ Academy and the new Venturers’ Academy for children with autism from age four to 16.
Mr Short will be working closely with the Executive Principal of Merchants’ Academy Trust, Dr Hilary Macaulay, to build on the impressive achievements and success of the academy to date.
Mr Short brings to the role a clear and strategic vision to ensure that the educational journey for students is seamless. “Inspiring our youngest students to raise their expectations and celebrate their achievements, will result in a greater number of children progressing on to A-level study,” he said. “We are now seeing the highest ever number of students going on to secure places at universities across the country from our rapidly growing Sixth Form.”
It is this determination to achieve the very best for all students that has won the academy the respect of the community, parents and students, and Mr Short is committed to further raising standards and leading continual improvements.
“Being part of Merchants’ Academy Trust brings many positive advantages for both students and teachers,” Mr Short continued. “Investment in infrastructure, attracting and retaining the best calibre of teaching staff, and harnessing the expertise and support of the Trust will take Merchants’ Academy from ‘Good’ to ‘Outstanding’. As Principal, I will continue to drive the academy forward from strength to strength.”
The long-established commitment and expertise of the Trust’s sponsors, the Society of Merchant Venturers and the University of Bristol, brings with it a level of unsurpassed support and benefit for both the students and staff.
Ross Ancell, Chair of Governors for Merchants’ Academy Trust, said: “The academy has achieved tremendous improvement over the past eight years and it is vital that we sustain the academy’s ambition for success. After a rigorous selection process Nick Short was the unanimous choice of the Governors."
Dr Macaulay added: “Nick has considerable leadership qualities. His vision for the academy prioritises positive outcomes for young people and he has an unwavering focus that will ensure every student and member of staff achieves more than they ever thought possible.”
