January sales 2017: Why now is the time to grab a bargain

High street bargains at the end of January, a selection from Lucinda Reid

January is commonly the month where we have the least money, so retailers do everything they can to persuade us to go shopping.

As a keen shopper, I need little persuading, but even I would admit that January is the hardest time to shop. After all, our bank balances are still recovering from Christmas, so spending money on items we don’t necessarily need is hard to justify. But, and this is a big but, I have some good news.

The beginning of the January sales isn’t actually the best time to shop. In fact, mid-late January is when the shops slash their prices and offer discounts on top of the sale. So, after a few months staying in and avoiding spending money, maybe now is the time to treat yourself…

1. Topshop shoes for under £10

Topshop recently posted on their Facebook page about a pair of silver boots that had been reduced to £7. As you can imagine, everyone went wild for this deal and the boots have nearly sold out, but there are plenty of other bargains to choose from. From strappy sandals to on-trend loafers, there is a style to suit anyone’s taste. Also, keep your eye out for in-store deals, as Topshop sometimes offer an extra 20% off sale.

2. Cos dresses for under £20

Cos has recently opened in Bristol, and if you haven’t had a chance to visit the store, now is the time. Known for its minimalist and contemporary designs, Cos creates beautiful clothes that you won’t want to take off. In their January sale they have some amazing buys, including dresses for under £20. I personally love their cherry shift dress for £18 as it is suitable for the office and drinks after work.

3. Zara tops for under £15

After its recent makeover, the Zara store in Bristol has never looked so good. To make the most of Zara’s new look, try and visit the store during the evening, as with less shoppers around you’ll be able to find what you need at your own pace. Zara has recently dropped their sale prices again and with good stock, you’ll be able to grab a bargain in the size you need. If you aren’t sure where to start, take a look at their formal tops as with prices starting at as little as £12.99, you’ll be amazed at what you can find.

4. H&M skirts for under £15

H&M had a very strong Autumn/Winter 2017 collection, so in the January sale you can find fantastic on-trend pieces. Remember the velvet skirt you wanted to buy before Christmas but had to buy a gift for someone else instead? Well, now it’s only £10.49 and it would look great in your wardrobe. Similarly, there is a bold pink satin skirt in the sale for £11. 99 if you want to channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw.

5. Oliver Bonas accessories for under £25

Oliver Bonas is always a good idea if you want to update your accessories. Wearing a new necklace is a quick and easy way to change your look and Oliver Bonas has a great selection of jewellery in their January sale. I love their Thread-Through Collar necklace (which is definitely a dupe for a Cos necklace that is double the price!) and the Chevron Wooden Panel Collar necklace. Elsewhere, they have some lovely bags in the sale and if you want to treat yourself to a little something, their scented candles are a purchase you will never regret.

Have you recently picked up a bargain? If you have, don’t forget to tweet @BPLalerts to let us know.
